      Main Library – Open to writers of all genres who are interested in interacting with and receiving feedback from fellow writers.  Members read and receive comments on current writing projects, and time is allotted for open discussion.

      Hilton Branch * All ages * One-on-one writing help for students.  The lab is staffed by trained coaches and will help improve each student’s writing in all subject areas. Students may bring some writing ideas or an assignment from school. No registration necessary – just drop in.  There is no Writing Lab on Thursday, May 30th.

    • The Centennial Quiz Show May 23

      In honor of Maplewood Memorial library’s 100th anniversary, the Library Board of Trustees will be hosting The Centennial Quiz, a community-wide, family-friendly, game show fundraiser. The Quiz Show will take place on Thursday, May 23, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Columbia High School.

      With Mayor Vic DeLuca as show host, competing teams will square off, answering questions about Maplewood Memorial Library, the town, and special questions from a “One Hundred Years” Wild Card category– all broadcast live on SOMACOM TV.

      Advance registration is open to all. You can register as an individual, a team, or an audience member. Everyone who attends will have an opportunity to win points and earn prizes. Refreshments and centennial souvenirs will be available for purchase. All proceeds, including ticket sales, will support Maplewood Library, one of our town’s greatest assets, as witnessed during Super Storm Sandy, when the library served over 1,000 people each day.

      Our May artist is Susan Brand.  Susan Brand

      Susan’s Artist’s Statement:  “I’m an artist with a devout interest in nature and the perpetual tension of the boundaries between humans and other species. I work in a range of media – watercolors, acrylics, printmaking, and collage. My early career was spent designing and directing animation for television and film, and my paintings reflect an ongoing fascination with light and movement.  My work resides in private collections as well as the collection of the State Museum of New York.” This spring, Susan was awarded First Prize in the Sylvia Maria Glesmann Floral Exhibition at the Salmagundi Club in New York City. She holds a BFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and currently lives and works in Maplewood.   Her website is www.susanbrand.com

      A reception with live music will be held on Saturday, May 25 1:30 pm at Main Library.  John Straus and Friends will make a return appearance as our musicians! Refreshments will be served.

    • Hilton Energy Assistance Program

      Hilton Branch – Do you have high heating/air conditioning bills?  Save money by conserving energy!  La Casa de Don Pedro  is now accepting applicants for their Weatherization Assistance Program. Eligible residents in Essex County can receive free or reduced cost assistance to lower their home energy bills through the installation of energy-conserving measures.  Come to this free program to learn more and to find out how you can get assistance.

      Members of the Maplewood Historic Preservation Commission will be at the Local History Center at the Hilton Branch Library to answer questions about the history and architecture of local homes.  Come discover information and possibly early photographs of your Maplewood home, discuss repairs, replacement materials and resources on how to fix your home.

      If you are interested in the history of your home, the Library has some valuable local history resources as well.
