Main Library – Deaf Culture
Jason Wieland of New Jersey’s Department of Human Services will talk about the Deaf community’s shared values, beliefs, and visual means of relating to the world. The event will be ASL interpreted. This book talk series is based on Far From the Tree: Parents, Children and the Search for Identity. In his book, Andrew Solomon tells the stories of parents who not only learn to deal with their exceptional children but also find profound meaning in doing so.

Main Library – Blood supplies in New Jersey are CRITICALLY LOW. Donated blood is URGENTLY needed.
Please join the Super Community Blood Drive. Donate blood between now and January 17, 2014 and you will be entered into a sweepstakes to win Two tickets to the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in February.
All donors will receive a Super Community Blood Drive Wristband.
You may donate blood if you weigh 120 lbs. or more.
Please bring your Social Security # and a photo or signed ID.
Eat a meal and drink plenty of water one hour before donating. Water will be available at the donation site.
Sixteen-year-olds may donate if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Both must present ID.

Hilton Branch – This class is designed especially for people who may be just a little bit afraid of computers! You’ll learn how to control a computer mouse and how to go on the Internet. No registration is needed.

Hilton Branch - Cover letters are the “You had me at hello” of job hunting. In this workshop we’ll draft effective cover letters applying for specific jobs. Participants will need to have word processing/typing skills and are encouraged to bring actual job ads they want to respond to.

Main Library – Dec. 18, 7:30 – Maplewoodian Leigh Haber oversees book coverage for O: The Oprah Magazine and coordinates the Oprah Book Club. She’ll talk about how selections are made and share her experiences as a longtime editor. She has been a book editor for Scribner, Rodale, and Hyperion among other publishers, and has acquired and edited numerous bestsellers, including books by Al Gore and Steve Martin. Leigh raised her two sons, Sam and Geoff McKenzie, in Maplewood, where she still lives.

Main Library -This book group features titles written by New Jersey authors. This month’s title is: Almost Home, Helping Kids Move from Homelessness to Hope by Tina Kelley. The group will meet for a half-hour discussion, followed by a visit by the author, and concluding with a book signing. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.
