Internet Access Policy

The Maplewood Memorial Library is pleased to offer Internet access to library patrons as a way of providing the most current information resources available. However, the Internet is an unregulated medium; the library does not monitor and has no control over the information found through it and is not responsible for its content, timeliness or accuracy. Parents are responsible for monitoring their children’s use of the Internet. The Maplewood Library affirms the principles of intellectual freedom expressed in the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights.

The following procedures should be followed:

Computers in the adult area of the library are for patrons grade 6 and up; younger children may use them if an adult is present to supervise. Internet computers in the children’s area are for children through grade 5. Storybook computers in the children’s area are for preschool-aged children.
Computer users must sign in.
Time limit is one hour per day; from school dismissal until 6PM computer use is limited to 30 minutes. This may be extended at the discretion of the librarian. In the Children’s Department the time limit for computer use is one half hour per day.
Printing is $.10 per page.
Only one person is allowed at each computer (except at the discretion of the librarian). The exception is for the Storybook computers, and for parents sitting with younger children.
Children under the age of 8 must be under the direct supervision of an adult at all times.
The librarian may end any Internet session deemed inappropriate to a public library setting. Patrons who abuse Internet usage may be barred from further use.
Parents and guardians, not library personnel, are responsible for what their children view and read on the Internet. The library cannot ensure the privacy of individuals who use the Internet to conduct business or for personal correspondence.
