Ellis

Art & Music Reception

Saturday, February 11

3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Main Library – This month’s artist is Stephen B. Ellis, https://jazzyouupstudios.com/ . Music provided by Live jazz with Michael Mayo, https://soundcloud.com/michaelmayomusic

Born in Manhattan and raised in Maplewood, Ellis’s Caribbean culture and upbringing heavily influenced his artistic abilities. His parents, Lance and Marlene not only wanted their children to embrace their heritage and culture, but also to be educated and well-rounded in the visual and performing arts. His earliest medium was the dough his father would give him to mold into fried dumpling sculptures; which along with, ackee and saltfish were a Sunday morning breakfast staple in the Ellis’ Jamaican home.

Ellis enjoyed painting as a youth, but was lured to music while in the third grade. He inherited his older brother’s saxophone and found the gritty, sexy sound all too alluring. While attending high school, Ellis began to make the music and art connection by drawing and painting while listening to rhythm and blues artists. The sultry melodies transformed his work and influenced his style. Ellis often creates his work late into the night while listening to Kirk Whalum, Norman Brown, Kim Waters, and Boney James.

The music served as a catalyst to evoke feelings of passion and sensuality in his work. Ellis soon found himself creating a unique style, integrating bold lines with subtle layers of color He feels he has matured as an artist since his undergraduate years when his instructors would question his work ethic and mindset, when he would do just enough to get by. He soon realized he would have to become his own toughest critic. One of his teachers said to him, “Do not do things halfheartedly”. This profound yet simple statement made him realize that if he ever desired to become a successful artist, he must put all of his heart and soul into all of his work.

Ellis enjoys the works of Leroy Campbell, LaShun Beal, Frank Morrison, Alonzo Adams, Poncho Brown and sculptor Woodrow Nash. Their contributions to the arts have allowed doors to open and opportunities to flow his way. He has participated in selected group and solo exhibitions and has displayed his works in several galleries. Ellis feels he is just starting to scratch the surface of his potential as an artist and is eager to challenge himself in his ongoing journey.

Hilton BranchThe Value Proposition: Why Do People Say Yes?

The essence of marketing is the message. The essence of the message is the value proposition. Learn how to articulate a forceful value proposition so that clients, hiring managers or decision-makers can determine how you align with the needs of their organizations. The presentation includes both the conceptual and practical aspects of the value proposition, including its 4-part structure, methods for intensifying the force of the statement, and techniques for deploying a well-crafted value proposition across print, online, and verbal channels.

Presenter Chip Hartman was one of four lead web developers who built AT&T’s first internal news portal, The InfoCenter@AT&T. His business, ChipHartman.com, provides branding and value proposition development services.

Pride Month 2017 banner

The Grass is Gayer OUT in the Suburbs

Monday, June 19

7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Main Library – Maplewood Library is celebrating Pride Month with a special program featuring field notes from life in the burbs: readings and musings by local writers Peggy Hannis, Doreen C. Jones and Robert Shaffron. The women’s a cappella group Olympia’s Daughters will provide musical entertainment, singing songs of liberation. Co-sponsored by North Jersey Pride. Refreshments will be served. Free — and open to everyone!

Peggy HannisPeggy Hannis is a Nationally Certified Sign Language Interpreter, and has been earning a living as an interpreter for 32 years. As a hobby she has been a singer and performer for more than 20 years. A self-proclaimed choir geek, she spends much of her free time running to rehearsals and performances from up in Teaneck, and down to Asbury Park. She has recently began exploring story telling, which she finds far more terrifying than singing to large crowds. She moved to South Orange in 2014 with her two teenage daughters, and is feeling right at home in our diverse and artsy community.

Robert ShaffronRobert Shaffron and his husband John are permitted to remain in their Maplewood residence through the generosity of their two magnificent sons, Benjamin and Jordan.  Robert has been, variously, a playwright, an advertising creative director, stock boy, dishwasher, actor/waiter, and is currently a stay-at-home LGBT activist. He also bakes a wicked lemon square.

Doreen ChilaDoreen C. Jones is a freelance writer whose comedic stylings can be found in NY Dogs, Hot Guys ABZ and Say What? 700 Quotes That Should Never Have Been Said. While Doreen specializes in the humor genre her offerings on children with special needs are gaining attention. Ms. Jones musings can also be found in Matters Magazine and her daily blog mamasucksblog.wordpress.com.
