Read Around the World: Barbados

Main Library – Explore thought-provoking fiction from around the globe. Our Read Around the World book club meets once a month to discuss titles from foreign locales.  All titles are available from Maplewood Library or through the BCCLS consortium.

This month’s book is The Star Side of Bird Hill by Naomi Jackson. This tautly paced coming-of-age novel of community, betrayal, and love centers on two sisters, exiled from Brooklyn to Bird Hill in Barbados after their mother can no longer care for them. Dionne spends the summer in search of love, and wanting to go home, while Phaedra investigates their mother’s mysterious life.

This month’s book is Dust by Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor. Dust portrays the violent history of Kenya in the second half of the 20th century. The story moves between the lamentation of a single family and the corruption of national politics, swirling around one young man’s death to create a vortex of grief that draws in generations of deceit and Kenya’s tumultuous modern history.

Main Library – Chef Jesse Jones and Linda Eckhardt are proud to announce their new cookbook-memoir which offers 40 of Chef Jesse’s favorite feasts, along with the story of his life.

Chef Jesse Jones’s story is honest and heartfelt as he describes how the kitchen saved him from the streets. When he used his hard-won French     technique to make Southern fried chicken, then served it alongside his sweet potato waffles, all his diners could say was POW!

Chef Jesse is a gifted American chef who has owned his own restaurant, cooked in five-star restaurants, and cheffed for celebrities. He gives himself to charity events, to teaching kids to cook, and to encouraging everybody to get in the kitchen and cook.
