Art & Music Reception: Amy Zorn
Saturday, September 9
11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Main Library – Amy Zorn is a 19 year Maplewood resident who has too many hobbies. This is, perhaps, the fault of her mother and grandmothers on both sides whose artistic DNA she inherited. She has an art history degree from Vassar College and a Masters in art history from Northwestern University.
Amy has worked at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Whitney Museum. Aside from one drawing class, for which she earned her worst grade in college, she is self-taught, although sometimes she follows online tutorials. About a year ago she broke out her high school watercolor set to paint postcards to send to her parents in Florida. Since then she has upgraded her paint set and bought larger paper. Her background as an art museum curator and long-time Maplewood Garden Club member led to watercolors of flowers, plants, and occasionally animals, usually without preliminary drawing.
Rather than planning a composition in advance, Amy approaches painting like a puzzle, filling in and adding colors and shapes where they seem to fit, and she finds the process meditative and stress relieving. In addition to painting watercolors she has been sewing, quilting, embroidering, knitting, and crocheting since childhood. Amy hosts a monthly meeting of fiber enthusiasts at the library. You can see more of her artwork on Facebook at Amy Zorn Watercolors. Contact her at firstname.lastname@example.org. Artist’s talk at 11:20. Live music will be provided by The Straus Brothers Plus One.
