Main Library – Public Radio and Storytelling for the Ear

At a time when newspapers are struggling to stay afloat and laying off reporters who once covered local news, public radio – and its offspring, podcasting – are flourishing. WNYC’s Nancy Solomon, Matt Katz and Sarah Gonzalez talk about what makes storytelling for the ear work, and why audio is in the midst of a boom.  We’ll talk about how we make stories, our successes and failures, and why podcasting is such a rapidly growing medium. We’ll play some stories and pull back the curtain on working at WNYC, the nation’s biggest NPR member station.

Solomon is the managing editor of New Jersey Public Radio. She has produced more than a hundred stories for NPR and has won a Peabody Award for Mind the Gap: Why Good Schools are Failing Black Students. Katz reports on air at WNYC about immigration, refugees and national security. He covered former governor Chrisite through scandal and presidential candidacy and was a featured reporter on the Christie Tracker Podcast.  Full Ideas Festival Schedule
