For Parents: Conversations on Gender with Dr. Eunice Aviles

Conversations on gender

Main Library – Wednesday, Nov. 7 @ 7 pm. Part II: Gender Identity & the School System–”Where Does My Child Fit In?”with guest speaker  Dr. Melinda Mangin, Associate Professor at the Graduate School  of Education at Rutgers University

Join us for the second of a 3 part series on Gender facilitated by  Eunice Avilés PsyD, LMHC, LPC. We will explore the feelings & experiences of parents & caretakers around this topic. We will also discuss what legal  protections are in place for transgender students in New Jersey and how to address your child’s needs with the school system.

With the social, legal, and healthcare related changes that have taken place in recent years, the transgender & gender non-binary community has experienced an increase in visibility.  Increased use of social media has also allowed our transgender & gender non-binary children and adolescents to freely express and claim their right to be themselves.  Despite the progress, parents & caretakers often experience confusion when addressing this matter
with the school system.

Target audience:  Parents, caretakers, family  friends, teachers, & anyone that works with children & adolescents, including those within the Department of Children & Families.

Eunice Avilés is a Doctor of Clinical Psychology, a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Gender Specialist and an AASECT certified Sex Therapist.
