Coalition on Race and SOMA Libraries Give Teens a Voice

Teen Events

December 6

4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Main Library – Using the Community Coalition’s Coffee House Discussion model, Maplewood Memorial Library, South Orange Public Library and the South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race will sponsor small gatherings at the library for SOMSD students and other teens to candidly discuss race and specifically the implications of race for them personally. Groups will be encouraged to identify common issues and to then brainstorm ideas for how everyone can create more welcoming and supportive environments for youth throughout the community.  Initially, two sessions are planned. The first conversation is for students only and will be held at Maplewood Memorial Library on December 6th from 4:30 to 6 pm.

The second Teen Conversation is at South Orange Public Library on January 17th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, and we will add parents and community members. Teens and adults will meet simultaneously but separately in small groups that evening and then combine to share their ideas.  Pizza and drinks will be provided, so reservations are strongly advised, but not required.  Please contact  Emily Witkowski at ewitkowski@maplewoodlibrary.org, 973-762-1622 X5018 to register for December.  Details for the January 17h workshop will be posted later at www.twotowns.org, www.sopl.org and www.maplewoodlibrary.org.  Both sessions are free and open to SOMA residents.
