Imagining Tomorrow: Teen Book Club

What is this?

How can we imagine and dream of our shared futures together, alongside each other, in order to create better tomorrows?

That is the question librarians from Maplewood Memorial Library and South Orange Public Library will explore in this new book club for teens. This book club features science fiction books that explore questions of equity, identity, and alternate futures. Participants can look forward to snacks, crafts, author talks, skits, poetry slams, prizes, and more.

Who can participate?

The Great Stories Club (GSC) is intended especially for underserved youth. For our GSC: Imagining Tomorrow group, any teen in grades 6-12 in Maplewood Township or the Village of South Orange is eligible to participate.

When does this book club meet?

The book club meets every other Thursday at 5 pm in the Maplewood Middle School Cafeteria (7 Burnet Street, Maplewood, NJ 07040).

The book we’ll be reading next is Across a Field of Starlight by Blue Delliquanti. Our reading schedule for this book is as follows:

  • Thursday, December 7: First Half (Pages 1-176)

  • Thursday, December 21: Second Half (Pages 177-the end)

Please be sure to check the library calendar for further meeting updates.

What will we read?

The GSC-provided book list includes the books below. Up to 10 book club participants can receive a free copy of each book to keep.

To access print, eBook, and eAudiobook copies of each title at both Maplewood Library and South Orange Public Library, toggle the different dropdown menus below.

Acknowledgements

The American Library Association’s (ALA) Great Stories Club (GSC) is a reading and discussion program that gives underserved youth the opportunity to read, reflect, and share ideas on topics that resonate with them. The Maplewood Memorial Library is one of 29 recipients of the the GSC: Imagining Tomorrow grant, enabling us to offer this themed book club. Thank you to the ALA for making this possible.

We are pleased to partner with the South Orange Public Library and Family Connections NJ to organize this book club.
