A Rainbow of Pride Books for Teens

Happy pride, everyone! Please enjoy this cover collage, inspired by the first rainbow gay pride flag, created by activist Gilbert Baker in 1978. Here’s what the colors represent:

  • Hot Pink: Sensuality

  • Red: Life

  • Orange: Healing

  • Yellow: Sunlight

  • Green: Nature

  • Turquoise: Magic & Art

  • Indigo: Serenity

  • Violet: Spirit

Today, the most common versions of the flag have only 6 stripes instead of the 8 above. In the 1970s it was hard to source pink fabric to be able to mass produce the flag. Also, turquoise and indigo stripes got combined into a simple blue stripe so that there would still be an even number of stripes. Personally, I’ve always preferred the original version.

As with my previous book lists, every cover is linked to its entry in our catalog, so you can easily request a copy for yourself.

Sincerely,

Your Teen Librarian
